How to use the voice level chart

  1. 1

Choose the voice level for the activity, from 0 Silent to 4 Presenter voice.

  2. 2

Set the work mode: alone, with a partner, in groups or as a whole class.

  3. 3

Update both as the lesson changes, so the screen always matches what you expect.

What it does

  • Five clear levels

0 Silent, 1 Whisper, 2 Partner talk, 3 Table talk and 4 Presenter voice.

  • Colour-coded

Each level has its own colour, so students can check the screen quickly from their seats.

  • Work mode

Show whether students should work alone, with a partner, in groups or as a whole class.

  • Works with the noise meter

On the full board, put the noise meter next to it to show the expected volume and the actual volume side by side.

Ways teachers use it

Independent reading

Set level 0 and work alone. The room settles without you saying a word.

Think-pair-share

Switch to level 2 with a partner for the talk, then back to level 0 for thinking time.

Presentations

Set level 4 for the presenter and whole class mode, so the audience knows it is time to listen.
