A Classroom Noise Meter Your Students Can See

Let the screen do the shushing. This classroom noise meter listens through your computer's microphone, shows the volume in the room, and flashes when the class goes past the level you set.

How to set up the classroom noise meter

  1. 1

Press Start and allow microphone access when your browser asks.

  2. 2

Set the threshold to the loudest level you are happy with, then adjust the sensitivity to suit your room.

  3. 3

Choose a bar, a gauge or a face. Younger classes usually respond best to the face.

  4. 4

Leave it running. It flashes when the room gets too loud (add an alarm if you like) and gives a quiet point for every 10 seconds of quiet.

What it does

  • Private by design

Sound is analysed in your browser as it comes in. Nothing is recorded and nothing is uploaded.

  • Your room, your limit

Adjust the threshold and sensitivity so partner talk is fine but shouting across the room is not.

  • Bar, gauge or face

Pick the display that suits your class, from a simple bar to a face that changes as the noise rises.

  • Quiet points

Every 10 seconds of quiet earns a point, so students watch quiet time add up instead of only hearing about the noise.

Ways teachers use it

Independent work time

Set a low threshold while students work alone. The flash reminds them so you do not have to.

Group work and stations

Raise the threshold for table talk. Groups can see when they are getting too loud and bring it down themselves.

Silent reading

Start the meter at the beginning of reading time and let quiet points build toward a reward you agree on as a class.
